…crossings of light, volumes and colours in the works of Mario Russo – mainly known as a musician – is marked by musical prosody; it’s like saying that painting was born out from the same esthetic source as that of music; besides, in the relationship between them, music is the inspiring matrix of his poetical world…

…Mario Russo’s drawings and paintings – he is both a musicians and a maestro of paintbrush – are tackled with clever hand: essential in parameters, soft in colours…

…the Musician narrates… To his story he adds the suggestion of a pictorial core that descends from how much poetically and melodically the artist is binded to those memories… The light is not made of fragments, but it is absolute presence, true essence of images which become light, at the moment when the artist fixes them as feeling of reality…

…Are his stille lives properly so? Certainly not!  Just the opposite: they are “silent lives”. “Silent lives”, yes, fixed there with the superb elequence of  painting; that eloquence that only painting, only this marvellous art, can give to a mainly poetical intuition… Artist by both training and intuition, Mario Russo is the poet of painting…

Mario Russo appears as an imaginative artist, ranging from figurative to surrealist painting. At the same time, he is looking for new ways to externalize his expressive vein, able to create interest and curiosity poised between the representation of a figurative reality and the enchantment of dream visions, that are full of symbolic cues. His ink-drawings show a technical ability of the highest value. It has its natural continuation in pictorial works that fascinate by the expressive power, the chromatic intensity and the precision of the brushstrokes. These characteristics exalt his poetic inspiration and capture the attention of those who admire his works. With Mario Russo we are faced with an artist who has already reached high levels, while continuing his particular research aimed at experimenting with new forms of expression.

Comments from Gerard Argelier’s magazine given by collectors, directors of museums and gallerists

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 2006

His artistic research, oriented towards a contemporary dimension, highlights the constructive synthesis of the plastic and chromatic values. His language is very sober and expressive, both for collectors and for the neophyte user who observes his works on exhibition. Speaking of his his late works, particular attention is paid to the combination of primary elements, as a focal point of his creation. The technique through which he achieves his performance becomes a sufficient objective for an extreme evaluation, and certainly puts him in conditions of further ones. That’s because his research does not end with a given cycle, but tends to develop and expand new techniques, new messages and new colors, by combining this all with a sober and essential lyric.

The artist Mario Russo explores with his research of intimate naturalness, verifying tonality and signing in the presentation of his works rich in communicative and emotional reactions. The investigation of his painting offers us effective assessments of his symbolism combined with a figurative key rich in natural chromatic combinations. His painting emphasizes the significant elaborations of his reality, by mixing signs and symbols placed on the backgrounds of his natural expressive conception. Mario Russo narrates, with a perfect duality of image, the reality and the mystery agreed with descriptive anxiety and enhanced by chromatic combinations. His brush stroke is quick and emotional, and shows no uncertainty.
